A 60-year-old woman falls in her home and injures her knee. She and her husband determine together that she does not need an ambulance, but they are worried about the underlying injury.

In the Patient Financial Experience of the Future envisioned by the HIMSS Revenue Cycle Improvement (RCI) task force, the financial elements of this woman's healthcare journey is facilitated by health IT tools that enable real-time access and coordination of her health insurance, medical and financial information in a way that supports shared decision-making between the patient and her provider, and incorporates planning for the patient's financial responsibility into the front-end of the episode of care.

Modified cost-accounting tools and price transparency enable providers to more accurately predict the total cost for an episode of care, and all of the charges associated with that episode of care are consolidated into a single billing statement.
